To Eat from the Tree of Life 3

I’ve recently gained a greater appreciation for reading the books of the Bible in context – understanding what the author of each book intended to convey with their intricately crafted literary works and not simply grabbing phrases and fitting them into the preformed (and bad) theologies with which I approach them.

It all began when I listened to a great series on the tree of life, bringing a much-needed, more profound and fresh perspective on a topic I’ve written about before (praise God!). I share a few notes below🙂

The tree of life symbolises the picture of the ideal – being in a state of relational proximity with God in which you’re transformed through God’s life inside of you. It represents a gift that God wants to give humanity, a life that is beyond the original life that God breathed into humans. The first human, by nature, is susceptible to death. Nevertheless, continued eating from the tree could renew life and prevent death.

The tree of knowing good and bad symbolises a test – will I approach opportunities with my knowledge of good and bad (blind to my screwed-up motives and limited understanding beneath it) of which the fruit is pleasing to the eye and looks good to eat (especially if the situation/test is intense), or will I refuse to live by it and instead approach them with God’s wisdom? It encapsulates the fundamental human condition described by the bible so well!

Our daily challenge is to walk past the tree of knowing good and bad and eat from the tree of life.

Practically, first and foremost, wisdom and life are about listening to God’s voice. Tightly intertwined in the relational aspect (through the Holy Spirit) is to be transformed by His written word (the proven canon of scripture by the early church). We make this second connection through the images of Lady Wisdom and Lady Folly in Proverbs that can be connected to the tree of life and the tree of knowing good and bad.

A fresh perspective on the Lord’s Prayer:

He said to them, “When you pray, say:

‘Father, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, For we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us [who has offended or wronged us].

And lead us not into temptation [but rescue us from evil].’ ”

Luke 11:2-4 AMP

The two trees give me insight into how we should do things – here is the what (our targets):

Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

Mark 12:29-31 ESV

Ultimately, I’ve found a renewed joy in my broadened understanding of eating from the tree of life:

  • The relational aspect – requires caution as one can easily eat from the tree of good and bad in it (the perception of His words/promptings can be tainted by the clutter in one’s soul and one’s limited wisdom), and
  • The wisdom aspect – not only maturing in godly character and condition of one’s heart but also growing in His wisdom, which requires laying down one’s limited knowledge of good and bad in life’s various opportunities and when approaching the scriptures.

Opstanding uit die Dood

Vir die gelowiges (en veral vir myself);

Filippense 3:7‭-‬15 AFR53 (klem bygevoeg)

What Should We Do?

Do you know who God created you to be, and what you should do with your life?

I believe it’s crucially important to know. So that you can enter a place of rest, have clarity, confidence and the God-given strength to persevere. Having God’s vision of and for you helps you to align with it and enter that place of rest in which you don’t over (or under) extend yourself.

But where do you start?

Overview

The Broad Foundation (Old Testament Law)

In the old testament, God told Joshua to diligently obey the entire law and meditate on it day and night so that he may be prosperous:

7 “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:7-9 NIV

The Refined Foundation (New Testament Law)

Jesus changed the landscape of obeying laws completely, and it turns out all the Mosaic laws are contained in two “simple” ones that make His heart and intention behind them clearer:

28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”
29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

Mark 12:28-31 NIV

One of the dangers is that we only focus on fulfilling laws and forget all about God and our relationship with Him (Jesus gives a stern rebuke for such people in Matthew 23).

Fortunately, God does have a great understanding of our position, and to us who believe, He has given the Holy Spirit to guide and help us so that we don’t just end up tirelessly and heartlessly following a set of rules, rituals, laws and expectations (this article explores the topic of being free from the law in great detail), but rather navigate the freedom and forgiveness we have in Jesus (and enter A Growing Rest):

But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before, “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin. Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

Hebrews 10:15‭-‬22 NKJV

How to Approach this Adventure

It’s important that we give ourselves cheerfully when striving to obey His commandments (we can always start with baby steps):

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

2 Corinthians 9:7 NIV

While keeping in mind that we need His discernment to know when to challenge ourselves in what our hearts are willing to give, because our sinful nature (our flesh) will likely want to choose the path of least resistance and comfort:

16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

Galatians 5:16-18 NIV

Let God Lead the Way

To me, the ideal way is that everything we do, and getting a picture of who we are, flows from our love relationship with God (seeking His face, enjoying His presence, hearing his voice, following His promptings – some more thoughts on this in one of my previous posts – To Eat from the Tree of Life 2).

I can leave you at this point and encourage you to get to it, but I will shed some light on some of the specific, practical things we can be called to do.

First, find comfort in that you are intimately known and knit together by God:

13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

Psalms 139:13-14

Humbly Serve in the Body of Christ

Paul tells us that we are each called to humbly serve in the Body of Christ in various ways (I wouldn’t limit myself to one, permanent box – we are indeed pieces of clay):

3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. 4 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

Romans 12:3-8

Make Disciples of All Nations

You don’t have to “go” very far to make disciples (although I’m not saying you shouldn’t). I strongly believe this can happen wherever you go each day.

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Matthew 28:18-20

Discover Your Identity and Traits

In my experience, God has revealed some of my true character traits in broad strokes, and others in finer, specific ones. Some of these traits blend in with my talents (natural, and developed), and are things that I can joyfully carry the load of each day. He has also shone a light on some good qualities, and some “dangerous” qualities that I need to stay mindful of. Related: Wie is Jy.

How? Out of the blue, and while reading certain scriptures, I have felt Him drop insights of who I truly am and what I’m called to do. Other Christians have also prophesied over me, confirming things and establishing new ones. Throughout this process of self-discovery in Christ, we have to trust and pray for discernment, because our hearts can be deceiving.

Grab it by Faith and Judge the Fruit

Ultimately, we need to grab our identity and responsibilities by faith (believe it to be true even though we can’t yet see it), and be mindful of the fruit that flows out of us;

17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

Matthew 7:17-20 NIV

so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God

Colossians 1:10

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

A Growing Rest

Are you in rest? Truly?

I’ve been reminded of a kind of rest that is a bit different than the one typically held up by the world’s shiny, golden poles – one that it isn’t a place of standing still, or an ever-elusive destination.

Instead of it being a place, I see it as a journey, where the Shepherd provides exactly enough to keep your belly filled with grassy jelly and your eyes shiny with glee.

You, in your absolute freedom of choice and independence, can definitely strike up some sweat on your brow and purchase yourself a fine piece of rest. But I can guarantee you, by the testimony of many a successful man and woman, that even that little plot will eventually crumble into something dry and empty.

Jesus is the only everlasting key. Many a time, and certainly now, He’s a door-knock away, and waiting with open arms for us to enter His rest. For us who have accepted Christ in faith, we have to listen (and respond) to those tiny nuggets of divine wisdom that the Holy Spirit drops into our souls; the small things we need to do, repent of, or change, to clean our consciousness and enter His rest.

He already sees everything, and He is mighty to discern and divide between the things in your soul and spirit that are either rest-traps or rest-injectors. And when we clear out our conscience, we can boldly enter His throne of grace, where His provision is plenty.

“Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts.” For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 4:7‭-‬16 NKJV

I mentioned it above – that this position of rest is one in which we are still moving and growing. If you’re still new, or even if you’re as old as a greybeard-goat, the scriptures point out the things of our fallen nature that we need to let die (the things that ultimately steal peace). A stagnant, dead, branch is eventually cut off and put into a very non-pleasant fire if it doesn’t bear fruit. And the only ticket from that everyday-hellfire is by turning back to Jesus so that he can plant you anew.

So I urge you like I’ve recently been urged myself – grow in Jesus, be that delightful, soft, pliable piece of clay. Study the scriptures, lovingly help and be helped by your nearby brothers and sisters in Christ, and repent of those little things that build up like cholesterol, which eventually causes that non-rest-inducing heart attack.

Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.

Psalms 1:1‭-‬3 NKJV

To Eat from the Tree of Life 2

A while ago (4 years) I wrote an article about a truth God revealed to me. Fortunately, I now have a deeper understanding on it! The essence of what I understood before: all works, no matter how good it might seem are dead works (insufficient, unsatisfactory, meager) if it does not flow from the heart of God. But now I will explain my new/deeper understanding.

In short: I now understand that God establishes His character in us. With that, His seeds planted in us grow to maturity and bring forth fruit to eat. Thus, we are changed from a slave (who always waits for exact instructions from God), to a son who knows (the Truth) when to sow, when to reap and when to do that all the things (and more!) he saw the Father doing as he was busy growing up. But there are two very important things tied in with this, both feed into the fact that He is our daily bread:

  • As Jesus stated, we firstly need to love God our Father with all we have got – this means relationship.
  • We should be weary of when the cloud moves. More on this below.

To step back, before this deeper understanding I used to live in a space where I would sometimes feel self-condemnation. I felt some of my works were dead because they did not flow from an explicit prompting by the Holy Spirit. But now I know that where God has established His character in me, there will be good fruit to eat, and works flowing from that does not always have to originate with an explicit thought coming from Him. But I definitely still need my daily Bread to be able to live and be continously transformed in the areas in me that need to be taken from glory to glory! And Jesus stays our ‘head’ – we must always be sensitive and submit to His will/guidance no matter to what degree of glory He has transformed us.

Backing it up with scripture

God’s transformation of our character

It happens as we see the glory of the Lord revealed in us. Scripture states that as we walk in Him and we see His glory in us (we look in a mirror and see His glory) we are then transformed to that image by the Spirit of the Lord.

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty [emancipation from bondage, true freedom]. 18 And we all, with unveiled face, continually seeing as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are progressively being transformed into His image from [one degree of] glory to [even more] glory, which comes from the Lord, [who is] the Spirit.

2Co 3:17-18

The son that expands upon the works of the Father

“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.

Joh 14:12

The cloud that moves

Just like the glory faded from Moses’ face, and God’s presence faded from the holiest of holies in the temple, we need to watch where God is moving and not stick to simple rhymes and structures (which God establishes initially and has great power/effect, but which fades or grows stale). Thus we need to steer away from the things we make laws (aka religion) to replace the Living God – and keep our focus on Him as he moves. Manna only lasted a day (well two if there was a Sabath) – see Exodus 16:21.

and we are not like Moses, who used to put a veil over his face so that the Israelites would not gaze at the end of the glory which was fading away.

2 Cor 3:13

The [presence of the] Lord was going before them by day in a pillar (column) of cloud to lead them along the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, so that they could travel by day and by night.

Exodus 13:21

Prevent Dead Works

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven.22 Many will say to Me on that day [when I judge them], ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, and driven out demons in Your name, and done many miracles in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them publicly, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me [you are banished from My presence], you who act wickedly [disregarding My commands].’

Mat 7:21-23

Putting God first, your neighbor (and yourself) second

and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul (life), and with all your mind (thought, understanding), and with all your strength.’ 31 This is the second: ‘You shall [unselfishly] love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

Mar 12:30-31

End note

One of the most valuable experiences God blessed me with the past week, was stepping out of my comfort zone to share His love with the people that came across my path. The more I simply stepped out to share the love He has for those who do not know it (and even those who do), the more I experienced His love (in such a deep and almost unbelievable way) for myself. I can truly say it is blessed to give and step out in faith. I pray for all of us reading this that we would let His river of love run through us, and not simply keep it locked up inside. People are dying every day without ever getting to know the love of God.

Wie is Jy

“Ek verklaar nou vir jou: ‘Jy is Petrus.

Body, Spirit, Soul

Intro

So, after more than a month of me getting a little lost in the brutish currents pushing my numb being about, God managed (by His supreme grace alone) to weave enough random clues and events alongside this raging river to deliver a much needed message; He finally poked me hard enough to realise that I needed to delve into the riddle of how the body, soul and spirit are stitched together.

There are lots of interpretations out there of our triune nature, all more or less in the same ballpark, but I couldn’t find any (yet) that gave me black and white answers where a single scripture lays it all out perfectly. So all of the below is the answers I’ve settled on (for now); the majority is based on scripture but there are one or two points where I’m simply trusting the authors of articles God made me stumble upon. So if you’ve got a scripture to prove me (or any of the authors I quote) wrong, please help me out. I’m no perfect teacher.

For people who don’t want to read hundreds of scriptures, I summarize in short the bulk of everything I learned under the heading below.

The Compressed Version:

Human beings consist of three parts, I quote a simple statement, and if understood, might give you the insight you require to understand the general idea of the three terms: “you are a spirit, you have a soul, and you live in a body”. I will give my understanding of the general meaning of the terms, but the simplest of words (like “spirit”) can be interpreted in completely different ways based on the context of the verse containing the word.

The body is rather obvious 😛

The Greek word for soul, psuché, indicates: a person’s distinct identity (unique personhood), i.e. individual personality. “Your soul is who you are: your will, your intellect, and your emotions”. “The soul facilitates between the body and the spirit.” The soul is the direct aftermath of God breathing (blowing) His gift of life into Adam, making him an ensouled being.

Your spirit is your ability to communicate with God and be able to function in the spiritual realm.

Our bodies hunger after unholy things. God is completely holy so we must therefore sanctify ourselves and be holy. This is accomplished when we are born of God’s incorruptible seed “which liveth and abideth for ever”, and by “purifying our souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit”. This implies that we need to be born again, we also need to sacrifice our own will (and the desires of our flesh) and rather be loyal to the guidance of the Spirit which enables God to form us.

God loves to delve into and search within your fearfully and magnificently breathed soul your body carries around, He also states in scripture that you should know that your soul is worth more than any worldly possession! Your soul was made to love and be loved, it was also made experience the roller-coaster of emotions that ravage through your daily life. If you want to get down and dirty and fill your soul with mighty pleasure; let “wisdom enter your heart, knowledge will be pleasant to your soul”. The word of Christ is a divine source of wisdom.

A challenge we face is that we need to discern whether things being stirred up in our souls are temptations from the flesh or birthed from the spirit. So apart from being a source of wisdom; the word of Christ is also “powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Thus, one aspect this scripture touches is that: the word helps you to discern whether the thoughts popping up in your head came from your spirit or from your soul (because God will never ever contradict His word) and it will give you clarity on what the intention of your heart is.

We are also constantly tempted by our flesh, and we abstain from these fleshy lusts by renewing our mind. A great tool to counter/minimize the temptations of our flesh is to constantly hunger (or be after) the things of the Spirit. God also encourages the growth of our souls by letting our thoughts constantly dawdle around quality stuff: “whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

So to talk a little about the spirit: “The first person, Adam’s, relationship with God is characterised by the fact that he walked and talked with God; that he received instruction from Him; that there was relationship. The ability to hear God’s voice was a spiritual ability. It occurred on an intimate level – the words “to know” are also used in Hebrew in the context of intercourse.”

After eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil in the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve died spiritually, literally their spirit became dormant, and thus their ability to hear God pretty much came to an end.All of humankind has thereafter inherited the same condition as Adam. This means that everyone after Adam has thus learnt to know God at soul level – and that is the enormous danger that we fall into – it brings about religion. Religion is the external act that people do on the levels of soul and body to simulate a relationship with God. If you practice your religion through emotion, through a decision of the will, or through intellectual reasoning, it’s merely a soulish experience – it cannot become a relationship with God. :O

One’s spirit is only revived out of a dormant state when you are born again. But you don’t just randomly become ‘born again’; conversion first happens (or needs to happen). Conversion precedes being born again. To elaborate a little on conversion: if you get to the point where you reach out to God, turn yourself towards Him, turn away from the path that you have walked till that point – that is your initial conversion. How you get to this point of conversion is ONLY by God drawing you:

“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him”

John 6:44

Conversion is your choice; God answers with your rebirth. In this way He brings you from the kingdom of darkness to the Kingdom of Light (Col 1:13).

So to come back to what happens when we are born again: “when you are born again your spirit, soul and body are integrated so that you can get to know Him on all levels of your existence.” Your spirit and God’s Spirit becomes one, and that’s the same for all our spiritual brothers and sisters! We are unified within Him and together we, as a spiritual family, form God’s body!

Things to expect when you are born again (these will start reflecting through your soul and body): “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance”. It is only through Jesus that God the Father can form us, and it is only by abiding in Him that we can bear fruit – without Him we can do nothing. Without the spirit, you will also not receive or actually grasp the deepest secrets of God – for it will be foolishness to you.

“For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.”

Rom_8:13

The Uncompressed Version:

Body

The nature of our flesh (or body) is given in Gal 5:19-21:

“Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like…”

So what happens if we give in to these cravings? (Gal 5:21):

“…of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”

But why is that!? (1Co 6:15, 20):

“(15) Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of a harlot? God forbid. (20) For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit (pneuma, breath), which are God’s.”

“For I am the LORD your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.”

Lev_11:44

We become holy by:

  • Being born of God’s INCORRUPTABLE seed (which only happens on His word/command, and when it happens it permanently changes our spiritual DNA) and thereafter,
  • Purifying our souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit (these two points come from 1Pe 1:22&23).

Thus, we need to let the desires of our flesh die off by listening intently to the guidance of our spirit – which communicates/works through our soul (thoughts, emotions and will) and doesn’t contradict scripture.

Rom 12:1-2: “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”

Soul

The Greek word for soul, psuché, indicates: a person’s distinct identity (unique personhood), i.e. individual personality. The soul is the direct aftermath of God breathing (blowing) His gift of life into Adam, making him an ensouled being.

“There is very often confusion between soul and spirit. Your spirit is your ability to communicate with God and be able to function in the spiritual realm. Your soul is who you are: your will, your intellect, and your emotions. The soul facilitates between the body and the spirit.”

I relay some of the things mentioned in one of the articles [2], the soul:

  • Can experience pleasure. “For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.” (Proverbs 2:10).
  • Reading Proverbs 2:1-10 gives a little more insight into how “the wisdom…enter(s) your heart”: God gives it freely, and it must be pursued! That’s also why God gave the invite for “us [to] reason together” (Isaiah 1:18).
  • The bible is also a great source for this wisdom: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” (Col 3:16)
  • Another note about God’s word: “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)
  • Is more valuable than any worldly possessions. “What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matthew 16:26).
  • Can be depressed. “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death, he said to them. Stay here and keep watch.” (Mark 14:34).
  • Has the ability to love, for it is commanded to love God. “He answered: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’…” (Luke 10:27).
  • Is continually tempted by the flesh. “Dearly beloved, I beseech you… abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;” (1 Peter 2:11). We must abstain from those fleshy lusts by renewing our mind: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Rom 12:2). We must also hunger (or be after) the things of the Spirit. “For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.” (Romans 8:5).
  • Is searched by God. Proverbs 20:27 indicates that God searches the inmost being of man, his soul.

Our soul is commanded to:

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Php 4:8

Spirit

“When God warned Adam not to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil in the garden of Eden (Gen 2:16-17), he also warned him that, should he do it, he would surely die. After Adam and Eve ate of the tree, they did not die physically. Adam lived long thereafter (Gen 5:1-2). What did the warning actually mean then? It means that they died spiritually, literally their spirit became dormant, and thus their ability to hear God pretty much came to an end. God is spirit and when one worships Him, one needs to do so in spirit (John 4:24).

All of humankind has thereafter inherited the same condition as Adam. All people have inevitably died in the same way as Adam did (1 Cor 15:22). We have all sinned and do not have the ability to have a relationship with God. There is no-one who seeks God. “They have all turned aside; they have together become unprofitable. There is none who does good, no, not one.” (Rom 3:11-12).

Everyone after Adam has thus learnt to know God at soul level – and that is the enormous danger that we fall into – it brings about religion. Religion is the external act that people do on the levels of soul and body to simulate a relationship with God. If you practice your religion through emotion, through a decision of the will, or through intellectual reasoning, it’s merely a soulish experience – it cannot become a relationship with God. Shocked!? Read John 4:24 again.

One’s spirit is only revived out of a dormant state when you are born again. When you are born again your spirit, soul and body are integrated so that you can get to know Him on all levels of your existence.

Perhaps to consolidate what we have learnt, let’s go over the main points of the wonderful process that God has put in place to enable us to know Him thus far: We have learnt over the past few days that God has called you to follow Him, and this precedes your salvation. Jesus makes this awesome statement in John 6:44: “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him”. Thus if you react to His voice, it is because you have reacted to His direct appeal to you: Follow Me.

This call comes to all people (Tit 2:11), not just specific people as some theological views present: “the saving grace of God has appeared to all people”. God always “desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Tim 2:4). Although the call comes to all people, you have to personally receive Him (John 1:12) – you must react positively to the call to follow Him. The Kingdom of God must be taken by force, Jesus says in Matt 11:12, and only those who do so, who want it very badly, will receive it.

Before we got to know God, we most probably knew a lot about Him. Because our spirit dimension was dormant, we could not know Him in spirit, and thus “we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way” (Is 53:6). But when you became aware of God’s call to you, you answered –this we call conversion. Conversion is thus the concrete choice that you make to answer God’s call to you.

If you get to the point where you reach out to God, turn yourself towards Him, turn away from the path that you have walked till that point – that is your initial conversion. Conversion precedes being born again. Conversion is your choice; God answers with your rebirth. In this way He brings you from the kingdom of darkness to the Kingdom of Light (Col 1:13).” [4]

According to one of the articles [3], the simple word used for spirit can be interpreted different ways based on the context of the verse. So it’s very hard (if you’re like me: not a top Greek scholar) to know what exactly is pointed to when the word spirit is used in a scripture, but I can at least try and decipher some of the scriptures.

So how on earth does our spirit connect/relate to God’s Spirit? 1 Corinthians 6:17 shoots the arrow right through the apple: “But he that is joined(“kol-lah’-o” – glued) unto the Lord is one spirit (pneuma).” And Jesus prayer reveals that we are to be found IN Him: “That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.”(Joh 17:21). The next piece also sheds light on the subject:

“The first person, Adam’s, relationship with God is characterised by the fact that he walked and talked with God; that he received instruction from Him; that there was relationship. The ability to hear God’s voice was a spiritual ability. It occurred on an intimate level – the words “to know” are also used in Hebrew in the context of intercourse.” [4]

So what does man’s spirit and the Holy Spirit do exactly?

Well “…the fruit of the Spirit (ruach, pneuma) is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance…” (Gal 5:22, 23). So when the fruit start showing up, you know you’ve allowed the Spirit to form your soul and/or body.

“Man’s spirit influences his mind and behavior. His patterns of choices and behavior become his character. In essence, man’s spirit is responsible for influencing his character. If man will allow, God’s spirit will influence his character.”

Scriptures tell us when we are baptized we die to the old man and is born a new. But we play a part in the process as we struggle with making the right choice for the right reasons. God’s spirit helps us to make Godly choices. He acts as a guide and counselor when we are tempted.

The spirit of God can only dwell in us by our choice. This is the choice of baptism. He dwells in us through his love and by our faith. God’s love completes us and he dwells in us because of his perfect love.”[2]

It’s only through Jesus that God the Father can form us, and it’s only by abiding in Him that we can bear fruit – without Him we can do nothing:

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. (2) Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. (3) Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. (4) Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. (5) I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. (6) If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. (7) If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. (8) Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.”

Joh 15:1-8

We need to remember that God is Spirit, so it’s clear that our spirit must stay firmly rooted within His (by keeping our souls pure in obeying the truth through the Spirit) if we want our Spirit to bear fruit.

(A lot of the scriptures I list below tie in nicely with the last scripture given above, I hope it gives you a silly smile like it gave me when I tied the strings between them. )

According to one of the authors [2] “the natural desires of the body places limits on man’s spirit. The spirit cannot go where the flesh is not willing or able.”

There is a ‘war’ between our flesh and Spirit. Choosing to follow the one usually limits the other: “For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit(pneuma), and the Spirit(pneuma) against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.” (Galatians 5:17)

The deepest things of God are only revealed through His Spirit:

“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit (pneuma) of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually (“pneumatikōs” – non-physically, that is, divinely) discerned.”

1Corinthians 2:14

“For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit (pneuma) of man which is in him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit (pneuma) of God.

1 Corinthians 2:11

The following scriptures also highlight the importance of involving our spirit, and not our flesh or simple mental capabilities:

“God is a Spirit(pneuma): and they that worship him must worship him in spirit(pneuma) and in truth.”

Joh_4:24

“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit (pneuma), and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;”

Eph_6:18

“For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit(pneuma) do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.”

Rom_8:13

The Spirit causes us walk the path God wants us to walk: “And I will put my spirit(“roo’-akh” – wind; by resemblance breath) within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.”

Eze 36:27

The Spirit is also VERY unpredictable! “The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit(pneuma).”

Joh_3:8

There isn’t a different Spirit for each person; those that are spiritually reborn are unified by God’s Spirit:

“Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit (pneuma), he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. (6) That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit(pneuma) is spirit(pneuma).”

Joh 3:5-6

“For through him we both have access by one Spirit(pneuma) unto the Father.”

Eph_2:18

“For to one is given by the Spirit(pneuma) the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit(pneuma); To another faith by the same Spirit(pneuma); to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit(pneuma);”

1Co_12:8,9

“That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; (23) And be renewed in the spirit(pneuma) of your mind; (24) And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. (25) Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.”

Eph 4:22-25

On the side, the Spirit also intercedes for us: Rom_8:26 “Likewise the Spirit(pneuma) also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit(pneuma) itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”

There are also false spirits, which must discern between:

“Beloved, believe not every spirit(pneuma), but try the spirits(pneuma) whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. (2) Hereby know ye the Spirit(pneuma) of God: Every spirit(pneuma) that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: (3) And every spirit (peuma) that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit (the word spirit here was just randomly added in the King James Version)of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.”

1Jn 4:1-3

God can also give us a spirit of slumber:

“(According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit(peuma) of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.”

Rom_11:8

What This All Meant for Me Personally

The core of what I learned was that I need to start sacrificing my own will and start discerning between my thoughts and emotions so that I can be led by the spirit and not be driven by the desires of my flesh. How the body, soul and spirit are all stitched together gave me the insight and clarity to know that the thoughts popping up in my head might not originate where I always thought they did.

I had gotten to a point where I realized that I had gotten detached from my spirit; I rather pursued the desires floating around in my own heart. I desired the love of others and many other things more than I desired the love of my Creator. I’m just glad He made me realize that I was busy forsaking the only source of true love and life..

The Revelation

To give the short version of the truth God has revealed to me recently, which really changed my mode of operation and which I would love to share with you: Our relationship with God, as our Father, should absolutely come first. Anything you do, any works no matter how “good” they are will return or be void (the bible terms the works as “dead”), unsatisfactory, meager and insufficient – except if it flows out of your relationship with God. These works flow out as you go, wherever you go [1]If the truth above did not unsettle you in any way, read it again.

…Now read it again 🙂

It’s a serious thing! It rattled the crap out of me! Especially when God launched the flaming arrow of scripture right through my brain:

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. (22) Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? (23) And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Mat 7:21-23

The moment I tied the threads to come to the above truth, a lot of things came to mind which I could immediately sense the fruitlessness of. I have kept myself busy with things that I believed brings God honor, such as doing the things I believe he created me for, the main one of which is the act of writing. But to be honest, the majority of things I spend most of my time on aren’t even God-related at all! I can strongly testify that since I’ve started applying the concept of seeking God and His kingdom first, I’ve experienced much more personal award and satisfaction, not to mention the feeling of achieving more than I could ever muster out of my own capabilities and spending time where it matters. The variance in works also increased; God had unlatched me from this single over-indulged purpose and set me free to do the many other things which He actually had planned for me every day – which (before) would have been completely lost.

The Story

Now I’ll give the main part of the white rabbit trail God put me on to give me this personal revelation. I mostly blabber, many things probably won’t make sense to you, but I felt I needed to include it, and I hope it serves Gods’ purpose.

In amazing ways he tied all the threads of clues and messages he placed all over which without some leadership and persistence on His side I would have missed it completely.

The morning of the 27th of June I dreamt of someone – let’s call her Person-A – and I was driving my car over some mountains and ended up in some tuck shop. I didn’t like her joining for the ride though.

And that was the dream, so what about it? Well… this dream contains some pretty set symbols in my life [2]. You’ll have to hang on a little to see how it all ties together. I asked God to show me what Person-A symbolized or meant that morning, and He placed clues all over, as you’ll see.

I went for a short and unplanned jog that afternoon and two car licence plates caught my attention, with my limited memory I only remembered the last three digits of each: 606 and 639. There was also a construction board with the name “Yoshuwa” overwhelmingly printed on it. So to cut a long story short: I read Joshua 6:6-27 (I wanted to read until verse 39) [1], and by some leadership by the Holy Spirit and Hebrew/Greek root meanings the words “a flat nose”, “a person” and “to devote to religious uses” resulted [2]. I immediately though of a friend I have who has quite a flat nose and how I feel that person had wandered away from God recently. But it’s not that God pointed me to that person to – He pointed flaws in my own mind-set that desperately needs “to be devoted”. But what was it? I had no clue.

To get back to the dream on the 27th; it completely confirms the paragraph above. A car in my framework (especially when I dream of my own car) directly points to my calling, which I (had) linked to only writing. This was the third time I’ve dreamt of Person-A sitting with me in my car while I drive, and every time in the dream I hated/disliked the fact that Person-A was still hanging around in my car.

That evening I searched through all my logs and discovered that I had already tied a meaning to her: “that which takes my love, excluding God”. I also randomly stumbled across a dream I wrote down on the 23rd of April, once again involving Person-A: I dreamt I hadn’t seen her the entire day, also had no contact with her. But I wanted to break any ties with her, but she didn’t contact me at all because she suspected the news was coming. I then entered a room where she was busy typing, and watching a movie somewhere in the background. Then I severed the ties and the dream ended.Back then, this dream didn’t really make sense, but it did now! The dream described above was the key. I immediately felt the Holy Spirit convict me that whatever I spent my time on was actually ‘taking my love from God’, and the fact that she was busy typing in the dream also strongly pointed to me keeping myself busy with writing might be stealing my love and actual relation with Him. I have no doubt about it, God had confirmed in many ways that He wants me to write, I strongly believe that it is very much an integral part of why He created me to do. But the realization hit me: I wrote only out of obligation for a long while, none of the pieces I wrote directly flowed out of spending time with Him and didn’t fill me with the usual genuine satisfaction. Another realization hit me: God wants me to do much more than just write. There are a million things that flow out of a relationship. If your wife sent you to wash the dishes and you keep doing just that and nothing else indefinitely, then who is going to pick up the kids from school? Or take the trash out once a week? Or bring comfort to your kid who randomly one day decides to fall and hurt his/her knee? Or when are you going to start talking to your wife to find out of other needs she might have if you’ve went on a mission to mow the lawn outside for the rest of eternity!?

Well that hopefully wasn’t too bad? I’ve trimmed most of the content, there are a lot of details left out, but I think it reveals how God communicates with us (or to me at least). I now give a few bullet points of how God confirmed and added to the theme all within the last week:

  • I have a weekly meeting with some working adults in my church; the theme was “God’s reformation/rectification”, the hot topic was how God rectifies you and that seeking His kingdom first keeps you aligned.
  • The preacher at church (“Stellenbosch Gemeente”) this Sunday (30 June) mentioned the truth (that good works flow out of a relationship with God). He also gave the extra needed insight into a big question mark which I stared right into: “how do you build a relationship with God?” The topic he preached on was Worship. So when he asked himself the question “how do you worship God?” he highlighted how one can have an intellectual (such as simply reading the bible) and emotional pursuit (see the next sentence) of God. He pointed straight towards the book of Psalms where one essentially reads how those authors seek and hunger after God in all the situations and states of mind they found themselves in.
  • The preacher at another church (Hillsong Somerset West) on the Sunday of the week before had the message of “what is in your heart is what flows out of your mouth” [5]. She mentioned your thoughts need to revolve around Gods’ word (or put a little differently; your mind needs to be aligned to His word). Because, do “…not (be) conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Rom 12:2).

So to end off, I’ll remind you of the truth mentioned initially: Even doing what you perceive to be Gods will, will lack substance/life when it does not flow out of continuous relation with Him.

[2] When understanding dreams you need to rely on a completely personalized set of symbols, which you build up through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. However, the bible also contains pretty set symbols and ties meaning to them – so seeing as the bible is breathed by God etc. etc. I think you can pretty much let it take full authority ? I’ve also been taught that dreams are mostly God telling you something; if you dream of a relative stepping in a thorn, it doesn’t necessarily mean that person is going to step in a thorn and you have to warn him/her. It means you have to figure out what that person symbolizes to you, and what God is warning you about(?) in that aspect of your life.

[3] Now that I look back the story told there is just another big highlight that acting out of instruction received from God leads to explainable results.

[4] The word “banvloek” (in afrikaans), or rather “accursed” caught my attention – I didn’t have a clue what it really meant. The Hebrew/Greek root it is derived from is: “to seclude; specifically (by a ban) to devote to religious uses (especially destruction); physically and reflexively to be blunt as to the nose: – make accursed, consecrate, (utterly) destroy, devote, forfeit, have a flat nose, utterly (slay, make away)”

I thought okay, that’s nice. So I looked up the other roots of the number plates, and this is what I wrote down:

  • H606 – a man, corresponds to H582, which is: properly a mortal.
  • H639: properly the nose or nostril; hence the face, and occasionally a person; also (from the rapid breathing in passion) ire: – anger (-gry), + before, countenance, face, + forbearing, forehead, + [long-] suffering, nose, nostril, snout, X worthy, wrath.

[5] Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. (34) O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
